Pet Pregnancy Scans

Are you ready to know for sure?

Whether an unplanned mating with the local Tom, an accidental encounter at the park or a planned and paid-for trip to a stud, you find yourself here because you want to know IS MY PET PREGNANT?

Let us check for you and hopefully give you a definitive answer.

Dates are very important when booking a scan, but we understand that it is not always possible to be exact.

The earlier the scan, the more chance we have of giving you a rough idea of how many to expect, but the less reliable it is in confirming viability (letting you know that the babies are alive with strong heartbeats).

The later the scan is booked, the more developed the babies will be, we should be able to see the heartbeats and watch them move within their individual sacs, but they will be too big to give you an idea as to how many there are.

Please scroll down to view further information on when to book and what to expect from each stage of the pregnancy. If you have any questions, please contact us.

This option is perfect for families and first-timers who wish to have the full experience of following the development of the puppies/kittens. It is truly fascinating to see the progress for yourself and it definitely adds to the excitement of the upcoming birth. This option is also suitable for breeders who want the reassurance that there is movement and heartbeats, especially in situations where there is a possibility of reabsorbtion, miscarriage or a false positive/negative inital scan. Please see the information below regarding when to book a scan and what to expect. If you need any help working out dates, please feel free to contact us.

Ultrasound Scans - It's all about dates!

The initial confirmation scan can be carried out anytime from day 20 onwards.

The earlier the scan, the more chance we have of giving a rough idea of how many to expect, it becomes much less likely to be able to count as the pregnancy progresses.

Please see the image on the right as an idea of what to expect during an early scan.

Early scans are great, we performed them on our own queens, as we know first-hand how hard it can be to wait! However, we must stress that they are not as reliable as later scans and we cannot use them to confirm viability (no visible heartbeats).

Pregnancies can be reabsorbed during the early stages, we have scanned early and confirmed, only for a miscarriage to occur and no pregnancy found at the next scan.

We would only recommend an early scan if you plan to have a second scan further into the pregnancy to check on progress. We have also scanned early in situations where a spay appointment is booked, but there is a chance of pregnancy and confirmation is required before proceeding with the surgery.

To summarise, if you want to know if your pet is pregnant and waiting until day 30 feels impossible, book an early scan from day 20 onwards. We do strongly suggest that you follow up with a later scan to confirm viability, especially if you have used a hired stud.

Day 20 'Early Bird' scan image.

We understand wanting to know as soon as possible and wanting a rough idea of how many to expect, so we offer early scans. However, to confirm 'viability', it is advisable to wait. If you plan to have more than one scan during the pregnancy, an early scan is a great start to the process.

Day 31 'General' scan image.

This is the most common and recommended time to scan, as you are able to see the puppies/kittens moving inside their sacs. You are usually able to see their heart flicker as it beats.

The best time to scan is day 30 - day 34.

Scanning during this period is recommended and is the most popular choice for breeders and those looking to confirm a pregnancy after using a stud service. As the pregnancy progresses, it is much harder to see an overview of the litter, but it is great at 'zooming in' on individual kittens/puppies and watching their movements, their heart flickering and sometimes what can only be described as them hiccupping!

While we are reliant on you for dates, if no pregnancy is detected at this point, it is unlikely to be a mistake and your pet is in fact not pregnant. While disappointing, we are on hand to offer a discount on a future scan when the time comes to try again. If your dates are not accurate or if conception did not occur immediately, a false negative result can be possible. If we say no pregnancy is visible during the scan, but you remain convinced your pet is pregnant, please do let us know. It all comes down to scanning at the right time, sometimes it can be too early or a delayed conception hasn't been factored in.

Scan images can be provided as proof of pregnancy, these are emailed to you after the appointment, usually within 24 hours. Where possible we will also try to capture a video clip, but this is completely dependent on the quality of the image, position of the babies and of course your pet.

Can we tell you exactly how many to expect?

We are an honest company and strongly believe in transparency with our customers, we simply cannot promise an accurate head count. We will tell you how many we see at that moment, but the further into the pregnancy you get, it does become much harder to give numbers. Ultrasound scans are not like x-rays, they do not give a clear overvew of the number of kittens/puppies. An ultrasound is a live view, so this means you have movement, overlappying of kittens/puppies and of course you are reliant on the patience and good temperament of the queen throughout the scan.

You may see some companies promising an accurate head count, but the truth is that with ultrasonography, it is a guesstimate! We can tell you how many we see (keeping in mind that sometimes the same sac can be counted twice, one sac can overlap another, etc), we can factor in the average litter size for the breed and of course take any previous litters into consideration. We cannot promise you numbers and hope you have an understanding of the reasons behind this.

We strongly recommend booking two scans during the pregnancy, an early scan to give a better chance at a rough head count (day 20 - day 24) and a second scan carried out further into pregnancy (day 35 onwards) to check on progress and confirm viability (heartbeats).

Your pet looks pregnant but you have no idea of dates...

Perhaps your outdoor cat has started to gain weight, or you have noticed some other changes (enlarged nipples, increased/decreased appetite, change in temperament, etc), in these situations we know it is hard to pinpoint dates if you did not witness the mating. You may have taken on a new pet and have your suspicions that they may be pregnant or even if you are an experienced breeder, a sneaky mating may have occurred without you realising.

We are happy to come out and scan in situations where dates cannot be provided.

If your pet has visibly gained weight and you suspect pregnancy, book a scan at any time.

Sometimes it is just fat though! Cats are notorious for tricking neighbours into feeding them, it can happen and they may have you wondering if kittens are on the way. At least you will have an answer and can implement a diet if need be. In other situations, weight gain can be the result of an underlying health condition, so after ruling out pregnancy, a trip to the vet is advisable.

If we scan and confirm pregnancy on a pet with a visibly large belly, it is likely that the pregnancy will be too far advanced to give a rough headcount. However, you will get to experience seeing the kittens/puppies before they are born and you will be able to get yourself organised before their birth.

If you notice some dried crust around your pet's nipples, your pet is nearing the end of their pregnancy so it may not be worth scanning to confirm. However, we will leave this decision up to you and simply be on hand if you would like us to confirm. We are more than happy to offer advice and run you through what to expect from the birthing process and what you'll need to buy in preparation. Late stage scans offer the chance to see fully formed kittens/puppies before birth, it is an amazing experience and something we enjoy doing with our own queens.

We can also scan your pets during labour and after they have given birth to confirm that labour has finished, although this is subject to availability and may incur an additional charge, as it is often required at short notice.

*By booking a scan with us you are agreeing to the terms below*

General Terms:

£10 holding deposit is required for all appointments, this is payable through our booking platform or through the booking link we provide.

The remainder of the balance is to be paid at the time of the appointment, we accept cash and card payments.

The booking deposit is only refundable if we do not cover your area, if we cannot offer an appointment at a mutually agreeable time or if you wish to cancel.

We require at least 48 hours' notice for cancellations. If you cancel with less than 48 hours' notice, you are not entitled to a refund of the booking deposit.

If you need to cancel and you do provide 48 hours' notice, you will be given the choice of a rescheduled appointment or a refund.

Please note that if the booking deposit is refunded, it may take up to 3 working days to appear in your account. Unfortunately, we have no control over the processing time as this is down to the payment services provider. We do recommend checking that we cover your area before using our booking platform in order to avoid needing to be refunded and the subsequent delay on receiving the funds in your account.

If you opt for '2 Ultrasound Scans - Confirmation Scan & Progress Scan', the full amount must be paid at the first appointment in order to secure this discounted price. The total is not split between the two appointments.

For ultrasound scans, full payment is required even if no pregnancy is detected. We understand that this is disappointing news, however, payment is due for services rendered. We will offer a discount on future bookings. We are completely reliant on your dates being correct, sometimes it is simply 'too early' to scan, so please do not book before day 25 where possible to minimise the risk of a false negative result. Early scans are only recommended if you plan to follow up with a later scan to confirm viability and check progress.

We will require your full address and contact number in order to complete the booking. Your details are kept safe and are never shared with third parties.

If we attend your address and no one is present, no refund will be offered. We will send reminders ahead of your appointment via email and/or text message.

If we need to cancel your appointment, you will be offered a new date/time or a full refund. We endeavour to keep all booked appointments and would only cancel in circumstances beyond our control, such as; weather conditions, equipment breakdown, transport problems or illness.

We are not a veterinary service and do not replace veterinary advice or services, if you have any concerns about the health of your pet or your pet's pregnancy, please contact your local vet. The advice and information we offer is based on completion of training courses and experience cat breeding.

Please note that our staff do not consent to being filmed during fulfilment of the outlined services, concentration is required and this can be very off-putting, especially when such videos are to be shared on social media. We will provide scan images/videos after the appointment (if possible), so we ask that you please refrain from recording us when the scan being carried out. There will be the opportunity to take photos, but we politely request that our staff are not included in these without expressed consent.

We want to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting our small business and allowing us to share in the excitement of your breeding journey.
